Fox Point Sauna

Fox Point Sauna
RISD Wintersession Architectonics

The main project for my Architectonics class was to design a sauna in Fox Point, Providence. The class made a trip to Fox Point, and we quickly found out that the sight had lots of empty lots, abandoned houses and harbors. There was also a big bridge for cars right next to the sight which was going to be a challenge, since sauna's were usually built in peaceful forests near lakes.

A topographical study of Fox Point. The different colors show the changing riverside over the years.
Different sketches of potential designs.
I decided the design above was too flamboyant compared to the bareness of the area.
Chose the overall design above but decided to streamline it, and use materials like concrete so it would go well with its surroundings.

Designing modular pieces that could be potentially used for the building.
Drawings for the final design. The openings in between the smaller buildings of the sauna lets in natural light. The water can be accessed from within the building.
Models of the building:
Designed the building so that it would shut off view of the cars and bridges. Instead there are openings towards the harbors so people could see the harbors instead. Users can see outside from inside but the view is secluded from outside.
